Single Women in Korea

It’s the 21st century and almost 61 years since the Korean War, in a survey Korea is found at last place on a gender equality ranking list. Even so Korea’s current president is Park Geun Hye 박근혜.

If women is supposedly still stuck in traditional thinking and gender roles then single women is even more stigmatized. Getting pregnant without being married or while stilll being unwed is supposedly considered extremely shameful. Family members, parents , siblings and grandparents can persuade, pressure or influence young girls in to surrender or abandon their newborns.

Also, bing a divorced woman in Korea is though too, the children “belongs” to the father usually. Therefore children of divorce are oftentimes sent to relatives or given up for adoption. Although it’s legally accepted for a Korean woman to have children with her surname instead of the husband.

KUMFA, Mindle Mothers have argued to change the Korean women’s situation.

In Sweden it’s common to live in a civil union and have children, without being shunned by society. But Sweden is not perfect in terms of gender equality or feminism.

In Sweden it’s common to cohibit and have children, without being shunned by society. But Sweden is not perfect in terms of gender equality or feminism.
